Is there a way to show a filter row in the grid area of the gantt control? Better yet, is there a way to get an instance of the grid object?

After further investigation, it appears that both of these behaviors will require a product idea; as the Grid instance used by the UltraGanttView is not exposed beyond what is allowed through the GridSettings properties collection extended from the UltraGanttView control.
